San Francisco de Opalaca Parish
San Francisco de Opalaca, Honduras
Since October 2023, the brothers have been present in the diocese of Gracias, where they are based in a former Franciscan mission. They serve the indigenous population of the Sierra de Opalaca, scattered across small, modest villages. Every day is an adventure along muddy roads that wind through coffee plantations and ecological reserves. Despite the severe and frequent hardships, joy, singing, and processions are abundant among the Lencas. Faith occupies a central place in their lives and in the organization of their communities. For centuries, despite the lack of priests, the faith has been preserved and lived out in this “good soil.”
“It is inconceivable that someone could call themselves a “Christian” and not, like Christ, make a preferential choice for the poor.”
– Saint Oscar Romero
“Christianity is not a collection of truths to be believed, rules to be followed, or prohibitions. Seen that way, it is unappealing. Christianity is a person who loved me immensely, who demands and claims my love. Christianity is Christ”.
– Saint Oscar Romero
